The possible companions of young radio pulsars
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss the formation of pulsars with massive companions in eccentric orbits. We demonstrate that the probability for a non-recycled radio pulsar to have a white dwarf as a companion is comparable to that of having an old neutron star as a companion. Special emphasis is given to PSR B1820–11 and PSR B2303+46. Based on population synthesis calculations we argue that PSR B1820–11 and PSR B2303+46 could very well be accompanied by white dwarfs with mass > ∼ 1.1M⊙. For PSR B1820–11, however, we can not exclude the possibility that its companion is a main-sequence star with a mass between ∼ 0.7M⊙ and ∼ 5M⊙.

Searching for substellar companions of young isolated neutron stars
Context. Only two planetary systems around old ms-pulsars are currently known. Young radio pulsars and radio-quiet neutron stars cannot be covered by the usually-applied radio pulse timing technique. However, finding substellar companions around these neutron stars would be of great interest – not only because of the companion’s possible exotic formation but also due to the potential access to ...
متن کاملNeutron Star Mass Measurements. I. Radio Pulsars
There are now about fifty known radio pulsars in binary systems, including at least five in double neutron star binaries. In some cases, the stellar masses can be directly determined from measurements of relativistic orbital effects. In others, only an indirect or statistical estimate of the masses is possible. We review the general problem of mass measurement in radio pulsar binaries, and crit...

متن کاملRecycled Pulsars Discovered at High Radio Frequency
We present the timing parameters of nine pulsars discovered in a survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes at 1400 MHz with the Parkes radio telescope. Eight of these pulsars possess small pulse periods and period derivatives thought to be indicative of “recycling”. Six of the pulsars are in circular binary systems, including two with relatively massive white dwarf companions. We discuss the im...
متن کاملWhich unidentified EGRET sources are gamma-ray pulsars?
We consider high energy γ-ray radiation from the radio pulsars associated with some unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources. Calculated efficiencies for the conversion of spin-down power to γ-rays and the energy spectra of the high energy γ-rays from these possible γ-ray pulsars in outer gap models are compared with observed results. Of these possible γ-ray pulsars, our results indicate that (i) PSR B...
